Real time pricing is an important tool for an entity to apply to manage curb space and implement curbside priorities. The pricing strategies can optimize revenue while ensuring parking availability and modal prioritization. Most progressive entities have static prices per time frame based upon demand analysis by time of day and day of week. World class entities use a system to provide real time dynamic pricing per time frame based upon a sustainable approach to mode prioritization.

World Class cities have matured to prepare for connected-autonomous vehicles, integrating their navigation system into the entity’s reservation system. The system  uses real time availability, anticipated arrival time and dwell time, and uses block chain technology for our curbside.

Real Time Zones & Modal Pricing

In the near term, managers of curb space in urban areas will be applying  a system to provide dynamic, reservation based spaces. This provides great customer service as well as allows an entity to prioritize and regulate demand.

Real time reservations

Navigation / guidance components are normally found in mobile apps and vehicles, determining the path to a location identified by the user. While beneficial to the user, this unregulated identification of curb space leads to curbside management problems such as double parking, docking in safety buffers, and blocking modal priority lanes.

The purpose of this curbside management element is to view navigation as a tool that the curb owner applies to direct curb users to specific curb destinations, based on the owner's priorities / optimization methods.

Navigation / Guidance

The technology is available to enforce curbside regulations using handheld devices, enforcement personnel, license plate reading technology, and cameras on transit vehicle or other non-enforcement vehicles, and fleet owned connected autonomous vehicles.

Automated Enforcement

Parking authorities have been benefiting from advancements in payment methods for the past 20 years, reducing individual meters, cash payments, and improving the streetscape with less clutter. These advancements have reduced the need for cash collections and increased financial accuracy and accountability. Deployment of pay-by-cell methods have been well received as a convenience, but more importantly have helped the special needs community that have mobility challenges.

With the movement towards various docking vehicles versus parking motor vehicles, our industry is again addressing payment methods in a creative way that benefits the curb user and owner.

World class entities use payment meters or stations, pay by phone, reservations using block chain technology for their curbside for implementing modal priorities, real-time pricing, and other management tactics.

Payment Methods

The scope of data required for managing curb space is evolving, and is the foundation for decision-making. This element addresses three important uses of data: inventory, analysis, and real-time space reservation / pricing / prioritization. The success or failure of a curb space inventory is the quality of the system in place to ensure the inventory and associated attributes are accurate and updated as change occurs at the curb.  Progressive entities are tying field work orders back to their asset management systems and curb space inventory software.

The wide range of new curbside management performance measures require data beyond turnover rates, occupancy, and revenue. The productivity of the curb space - dwell / docking time, person movement, and many other measures - requires extensive data interoperability and quality control.

As covered in other elements, real-time reservation, pricing, and prioritization  represent progressive functions of a progressive program and require accurate and  timely data. Progressive entities possess an accurate curbside inventory that is timely and interoperable on a limited basis.

World class entities have an enterprise-level solution for data quality assurance where data are complete, timely, accurate, consistent, and fully interoperable between systems.
